Sun Prairie’s Chris Davis Jr commits to College of Charleston

Sun Prairie East standout basketball player Chris Davis Jr., announced he will attend the College of Charleston next year.

Davis led SP East to the Sectional Finals of the state basketball tournament this year after transferring from Sun Prairie West. He had previously committed to Arkansas State, a basketball program with local ties in its coaching staff, but decommitted last month.

Davis has been outstanding so far on the spring AAU basketball circuit, playing for Team Herro’s 17u EYBL team, which is one of the most elite teams in the country.

Davis told ESPN Madison that Charleston will be getting “a dog” for their basketball program.

“I went on a visit not that long ago,” Davis said. “It felt like home. It’s right on the beach. The campus is amazing. The coaching staff is amazing. I feel like I’ll develop a lot over there.”

Charleston does have a winning program. The Cougars finished 23-9 this season and made the NCAA tournament the previous two years.

Davis is a two-time Big Eight player of the year and the fifth-leading scorer in Wisconsin high school basketball history, eclipsing legends such as Sam Dekker, Johnny Davis, and Sam Okey.

Davis began his high school career at Madison East High School, the alma mater of his father, Chris Davis Sr., for whom he played while at Sun Prairie West.

Davis sr., a legendary basketball player at East, Madison College, and UW-Whitewater, as well as a leader in the community, passed away eight months ago. The loss of his father has weighed heavily on Davis.

“It’s been rough,” Davis told ESPN Madison of his high school career. “My dad was my biggest motivation this whole year. I never put my head down because my dad would always put my head back up. I couldn’t give up. I knew my dad wouldn’t let me give up.”
