President Donald J. Trump was impeached on Wednesday.

The House of Representatives voted to impeach a sitting president for the third time in U.S. history. It followed a day-long debate on whether Trump violated his oath in pressuring Ukraine to damage a political opponent.

The vote fell mostly along party lines with 229 Democrats voting for the charge and 197 Republicans against.

The House then proceeded to vote to impeach on the second article — obstruction of Congress.

The Senate trial on whether to remove the president will begin in early January.
