The Urban League of Greater Madison will host a special training for food vendors and caterers at its Black Business Hub on Monday, Feb. 17.
Training is in coordination with the Urban League, Public Health Madison and Dane County, City of Madison and Northside FEED Kitchen. The Urban League wants to address unrealized requirements to start your own vending and catering business.
“Most people, because you have an idea and have a passion for food, they want to sell and cater food,” said Jeffery Norwood, commercial kitchen manager of the Urban League’s Black Business Hub. “A lot of people cater out of their house because it can be a little overwhelming not knowing what steps to take.”
Topics covered will include obtaining a seller’s permit, licensing, insurance and federal employer identification number along with food safety and sanitation certification. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive avenue to answer questions for those looking to start or expand their food business.
Speakers like Chris Brockel from FEED Kitchen will touch on the commercial kitchen aspect. In Wisconsin, while you can operate your own food business out of your own home, there are requirements that would make finding space in a commercial kitchen — like FEED or the Black Business Hub.
Requirements still include permits and training in food handling and sanitation, but a business home kitchen is required to be a separately built structure with proper ventilation, washable floors, walls and ceiling.
The food vendor and catering training will be held Feb. 17, 10-11:30 a.m., in room 402 of the Black Business Hub, 2352 S. Park St. It’s free to attend; limited seats are available.
