Wisconsin consumer protection officials have banned late fees and penalties for missed rent payments as the coronavirus pandemic enters its third month.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has officially approved an emergency bill that prevents landlords from charging late fees or penalties during the public health emergency, which is set to expire May 26, and 90 days afterward.
“Due to the rapidly changing economic landscape, many people have also had to navigate job losses, furloughs, and layoffs. As a result, their incomes are lower or gone altogether, making it extremely difficult to pay their rent in a timely manner during this public health emergency,’ the DATCP said in a press release.
Back in March, Gov. Evers suspended evictions and foreclosures for 60 days.
