The state of Wisconsin reported 120 COVID deaths on Tuesday, the most in a single day, bringing the state’s total death toll to 4,545. An additional 102 people have tested positive for COVID but died of other causes. The seven-day daily death average jumped from 51 to 6.4, the 14-day rose from 49 to 53 while the 30-day average rose from 47 to 51.

The state also reported just 6,852 new coronavirus tests on Tuesday, of which 2,403 were positive, for a positive test rate of 35 percent.

The state is processing far fewer tests for novel coronavirus than it did at the peak in mid-November — barely over half the number on a daily basis — which is likely responsible for a sharp decline in the number of new cases confirmed each day.

From December 13-20, the state processed an average of 8,530 tests per day, a 54.7 percent drop since the daily testing rate peaked at 18,857 on November 13.

The seven-day positive rate for all people fell slightly to 26.2 and the positive rate for all tests rose slightly from 9.0 to 9.1. The number of active cases continued its steady decline and is now just under 35,000 — about 7.6 percent of the 46,015 total cases the state has confirmed to date.

The seven-day average of new cases per day held at 2,703.

The number of people hospitalized continued a steady decline, falling by 34 to 1,274. The ICU population, however, rose by nine to 281.
