Madison365 Academy intends to recruit and train the next generation of journalists of color.
The Madison365 Academy Summer Program is a partnership between Madison365 and the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. Ten students spent three weeks with our editorial staff learning the trade and craft of community journalism in the summer of 2016, and so far six college students have become regular contributors to Madison365 as interns in the Madison365 Academy Core Program.

Damitu Hamda is a senior at Verona Area High School. After graduating, she aspires to attend a university located in the Twin Cities to study International studies/relations. She enjoys studying cultures and languages and hopes to become fluent in Spanish and French as well as travel the world. Her family comes from Oromia, a region of land found in East Africa. She plans to dedicate her career towards their liberation. Her interests include: watching bio-pics, spoken word/poetry, social justice, filmmaking, and biking.
Lupe Salmeron is a recent graduate of Madison East High School and a former Class President. She was born in the heart of Mexico. She and her family immigrated to the United States twelve years ago in pursuit of the American Dream. This fall she will be attending Edgewood College to double major in Political Science and Communications in hopes of one day becoming an immigration lawyer and helping people who are struggling with the immigration process.
Symonia Donaldson is a graduate from Madison Memorial High school, class of 2016. She enjoys riding her bike around her community, while job searching and running errands. Madison College is in her near future starting in the fall of 2016, studying Healthcare Administration and Insurance and possible re-entry for Medical Coding Specialist. Many opportunities have presented themselves to her and she will be attending college for free, thanks to the Dane County Job Center.
Ivanna N. Sanchez is a student at Madison East High. She is treasurer of the Latino Student Union. She plays soccer for East and plays volleyball and swims outside of school for fun. This summer she went to Washington, D.C. for the ACLU summer institute, where shelearned about civil liberties and civil rights. She is currently interning for Madison deputy mayor Gloria Reyes. She hopes to go to college for political science and do things that involve public policy and international affairs.
Chelsey Erstad is a 2016 graduate from La Follette High School. She will be attending the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point for their pre-veterinary medicine program. She has travelled internationally and enjoys being out in nature.
Sie’anna Mitchell is a senior at Verona Area High School, where she is also known as Sisi or (Cece). She’s involved in two sports, Track and Field and Basketball. Track and Field is her favorite sport. She was a 2016 state champion in basketball and has gone to state three years in a row in track for sprints. In the summer she continues in these two sports on Amateur Athletic Union teams. In college she’s interested in studying athletic training or sports journalism.
Jared Biddle is a senior at Verona Area High School. He runs track and will be on varsity for his fourth consecutive year. He also participates in Student Voice Union, the Spoken Word Club, and volunteer tutors at Orchard Ridge Elementary School.
Teeaisia Hoye is a senior at Verona Area High School, where she participates in various activities including Basketball, Track & Field, Choir, Dance Team, BSU, NAM, and College Club. She plans to attend UW-Madison or the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2017.
Maikao Thao is a Senior at La Follette High. She has five awesome nieces and nephews that she loves spending time with. She is a LaFollette Cheer Leader and on her free time she likes to watch Grey’s Anatomy.
