A Madison man serving time at the Dane County Jail is accused of asking another inmate to kill a Madison police officer, according to Madison police.
Madison police said Alijouwon T. Watkins, 20, actively sought someone to kill an MPD officer and took steps to put a plan in motion, including the transfer of money. Police said Watkins had personal identifying information about the officer, including her name, date of birth, address and a cellphone number. He also knew the officer’s work hours and the district she worked in.
Police said the officer had previously arrested Watkins and that it involved a violent domestic confrontation in which the officer was injured. Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said there is no ongoing threat to the officer.
Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said an incident of this magnitude is extremely rare.
The officer has been with the department for less than three years.
Watkins is also accused of trying to find someone who would claim to have witnessed the prior incident and provide false testimony.
Police are asking that Watkins be charged with conspiracy to commit homicide and solicitation to commit perjury.
Watkins is expected to appear in court Friday afternoon.
The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms assisted Madison police in the investigation.
