Art Reception for Jenie Gao’s “The Pioneers” will take place Saturday, Dec. 10, 6-9 p.m. at Cafe Zoma, 2326 Atwood Ave, Madison.
The work in this show began with a series of interviews Jenie Gao conducted with survivors of domestic violence through UNIDOS Against Domestic Violence. The stories were all different, heart-wrenching accounts of what it means to be isolated and forcefully controlled, and to fight for freedom and to break cycles of violence.
The stories also shared some common threads of people not making a change when abuse seemed normal and of making a change for the futures of their children and loved ones.
