Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley upset incumbent Massachusetts Congressman Michael Capuano in a Democratic primary last night and is now set to become the first African-American woman elected to the US Congress in Massachusetts.

The 44-year-old Pressley will run unopposed in November and will very likely also become the first woman of color from Massachusetts to serve in the US House of Representatives.

It is the latest in a series of victories for progressive, young and candidates of color representing the opposition party. Pressley has a very progressive platform including supporting the abolishment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Change is coming and the future belongs to all of us,” Pressley told the crowd at her victory speech.

Pressley was also the first African-American woman elected to the Boston City Council.
