Saying “it’s become very clear who our nominee is going to be,” former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes excited the race for Wisconsin governor on Thursday afternoon.
In a social media video, Barnes did not name or endorse another candidate, but he is likely referring to State Rep. Francesca Hong, who has a commanding lead in all recent polls.
In the video, Barnes said the fight to defeat Republican Tom Tiffany in the general election in November is “life or death.”
“Now we have to do everything we possibly can to defeat Tom Tiffany, and that’s exactly what I am committed to doing for the next 96 days,” he said.
A recent Marquette University Law School poll showed Hong with 38 percent of the vote to Barnes’ 16. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who dropped out of the race and re-entered after Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez dropped out amid fiscal trouble, had 13 percent of the vote while Joel Brennan and Kelda Roys each had support of two percent of those responding.
