Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, the 2016 primary runner-up to Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party’s nomination, says he will run again for president in 2020.

“What I promise to do is, as I go around the country, is to take the values that all of us in Vermont are proud of – our belief in justice, in community, in grassroots politics and town meetings – that’s what I’m going to carry all over this country,” Sanders said in his announcement on Vermont Public Radio Tuesday morning.

The 77-year-old Vermont senator became a progressive political star in 2016 while losing the nomination to Clinton.

“Three years ago, during our 2016 campaign, when we brought forth our progressive agenda we were told that our ideas were ‘radical’ and ‘extreme,’” Sanders wrote in e-mail to his supporters this morning. “Well, three years have come and gone. And, as result of millions of Americans standing up and fighting back, all of these policies and more are now supported by a majority of Americans.”

Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, John Delaney and Julian Castro are among those who have also announced their intention to run.
