The podcast Black Oxygen, hosted by Angela Russell, was honored Tuesday night with the Wisconsin Innovation Award in the nonprofit category.

The weekly podcast, produced and published by Madison365, features in-depth and authentic discussions with Black people who live in Wisconsin.

“It’s an honor and quite humbling for Black Oxygen to be recognized with the Wisconsin Innovation Award,” Russell said. “I had no idea the impact that Black Oxygen would have on so many people. Each of the stories and conversations feel so sacred to me. It’s my hope that Blaxk Oxygen can be a healing force of good for Wisconsin and beyond.”

Black Oxygen was one of nine award winners, chosen from 28 finalists and more than 300 nominees. Other winners came in the manufacturing, business-to-business, business-to-consumer, biotechnology, government, health IT and software, as well as a people’s choice award.

“The Wisconsin Innovation Awards seek to celebrate and inspire innovation, and highlight the creative spirit from the state’s leading public, private and nonprofit sectors,” said Matt Younkle, Co-Founder of the Wisconsin Innovation Awards and Pythonic Corporation, in a statement. “We want to congratulate all finalists and winners from the 2021 Wisconsin Innovation Awards and look forward to encouraging an even greater environment of innovation in the year to come.”

Besides hosting the Black Oxygen podcast, Russell is the vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion at CUNA Mutual Group.
