Dane County reports 486 new cases as hospitalizations hit new record high

Dane County reported 486 new coronavirus cases Wednesday morning, bringing the total to 19,895 with 15,297 cases recovered while active cases grew to 4543, or 22.83 percent of all cases. This increase comes a day after Governor Tony Evers’ address urging Wisconsin residents to stay home the new few weeks.

Dane County has seen an increase in cases of 72.4 percent in the past 30 days, since October 12, when the county had only confirmed 11,541 total cases ever. Yesterday, Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported that our 7 day average neared 400 cases per day.

As reported by Madison365, Dane County officials reiterated on Monday afternoon that the largest share of coronavirus spread happens in small private gatherings among family and friends. As many as 35 percent of those infected reported attending such a gathering.

Today, the number of people currently hospitalized in Dane County — both Dane County residents and people from neighboring counties — rose to a record-high 159. Of those 159, 41 are currently in the ICU. The ICU population has remained steady since Monday.

For Dane County residents the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has grown from yesterday’s reported 618 to 627. The newly hospitalized people include four people in their 50s, three in their 80s and one person aged 10-19 and one in their 70s. Of those 9 new hospitalizations, two people are Black, and two are Hispanic.

The increasing number of hospitalizations for residents in the County have grown significantly among certain groups and ages as cases have surged. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data which reflects that those in their 80s have grown 35.6 percent since October 28 while those in their 70s have grown 22.5 percent.

Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color as those who identify as American Indian have grown 25 percent in Dane County. while Hospitalizations for those who are Black in our community have grown 15 percent, 13.6 percent for those who are Asian and 12.2 percent for those who are Hispanic since October 28.

Of the 486 new cases reported today, 161 were attributed to November 10 while an additional 251 cases were attributed to November 9, increasing that day’s positive test count to 460. There were also 32 more cases were added to November 8, increasing that day’s total to 162 as 35 more cases were added to 11/7 and increasing that total to 461. November 6 continues to hold the record for the  highest single day of positives processed with 522 positive cases attributed to that day.

All age groups from 0 to 89 grew at least by double digits with those in their 20s with 120 new cases or 24.7 of today’s new cases. Those aged 10-19 grew by 84 cases while adults in their 40s grew by 77 new cases, adults in their 30s by 64 new cases and adults in their 50s by 61 new cases. Those in their 70s grew by 21 today with children under 10 grew by 20 and adults in their 60s by 19. Adults in their 80s rounded out today’s double digit increase with 13 new cases and adults in their 90s grew by seven new cases.

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, adults in their 90s continue to see the largest growth with a 50.4 percent increase in cases since October 28 while adults in their 80s have grown 39.1 percent. Children aged 0-9 grew by 36.2 percent for the past two weeks as adults in their 70s grew by 32.9 percent since October 28.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, American Indians in Dane County saw the most growth with a 34.0 percent increase while Hispanics in the county saw an increase of 32.8 percent. Black people grew about 25.9 percent in cases since October 28 as the Asian community grew 25.5 percent.

The most updated data on positive test percentage for a single day is for November 10 at 3.7 percent while the positive test percentage for November 9 has adjusted to 9.0 percent. The positive percentage for November 8 has grown to 8.9 percent and November 7 is at 7.6 percent. Madison365 expects that these numbers will be adjusted as more negative and positive tests are fully processed and attributed to the appropriate dates in the coming days. Yesterday at 2 pm, UW’s COVID-19 dashboard update included 27 new COVID-19 positive cases with 25 from on campus testing and 2 from off campus testing. Of those 27, two were employees and 25 were students. The seven-day percent positive rate for students has grown to 2.8 percent while the seven-day average of all positive cases has grown to 50.0 cases per day. In total, according to UW’s Smart Restart Dashboard, there are now 3,751 students who have tested positive and 290 employees for a total of 4,041 cumulative cases for UW students and staff.
