Dane County shatters record with 710 new coronavirus cases

Dane County reported 710 new coronavirus cases Tuesday morning, bringing the total to 19,409 with 15,015 cases recovered while active cases jumped to 4,339, or 22.36 percent of all cases.

Dane County has seen an increase in cases of 70.5 percent in the past 30 days, since October 11, when the county had only confirmed 11,381 total cases ever. Currently, Dane County is averaging 400 cases per day per PHMDC this morning in a tweet.

Yesterday, as reported by Madison365, Dane County officials reiterated that the largest share of coronavirus spread happens in small private gatherings among family and friends. As many as 35 percent of those infected reported attending such a gathering.

Today, the number of people currently hospitalized in Dane County — both Dane County residents and people from neighboring counties — rose to a record-high 156. Of those 156, 41 are currently in the ICU.

This morning, Dane County also reported its 56th death from the pandemic since the COVID-19 crisis began – a woman in her 80s.

For Dane County residents the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has grown significantly from yesterday’s reported 597 to 618. The newly hospitalized people include seven people who are in their 80s, four in their 60s, three in their 40s, two in their 70s and 90s and one under 10 as well as one patient in their 50s. Of those 21 new hospitalizations, three people are Black, and three are Hispanic.

The increasing number of hospitalizations for residents in the County have grown significantly among certain groups and ages as cases have surged. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data which reflects that those in their 80s have grown 33 percent since October 27 while those in their 70s have grown 24.7 percent.

Of the 710 new cases reported today, 219 were attributed to November 9 while an additional 130 cases were attributed to November 8, increasing that day’s positive test count to 112, while 310 more cases were added to November 7, increasing that day’s total to 426. There were also 57 cases added to November 6th – making this the highest single day of positives processed with a total now of 522. September 9th previously held this record.

All age groups from 0 to 89 by double digits. Adults in their 20s had the highest number of reported new cases with 171 or 24.1 percent as adults in their 30s also grew by triple digits with 139 new cases or 14.1 percent. Those aged 10-19 grew by 91 cases, adults in their 40s by 85 cases and adults in their 50s by 80 cases. Those in their 70s grew by 49 cases while children under 10 grew by 43 and adults in their 70s grew by 29. Rounding out today’s double digit numbers, adults in their 80s grew by 16. Those in their 90s grew by seven new cases.

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, adults in their 90s continue to see the largest growth with a 49 percent increase in cases since October 27 while adults in their 80s have grown just over 40 percent. Children aged 0-9 grew by 37.2 percent for the past two weeks as adults in their 70s grew by 34.1 percent since October 26.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, American Indians in Dane County saw the most growth with a 37.2 percent increase while Hispanics in the county saw an increase of 33.4 percent. Black people grew about 25.6 percent in cases since October 27 as the Asian community grew 24.5 percent.

The most updated data on positive test percentage for a single day is for November 9 at 5.1 percent while the positive test percentage for November 8 has adjusted to 7.5 percent. The positive percentage for November 7 has grown to 7.1 percent and November 6 is at 8.0 percent. Madison365 expects that these numbers will be adjusted as more negative and positive tests are fully processed and attributed to the appropriate dates in the coming days. Yesterday at 2 pm, UW’s COVID-19 dashboard update included 11 new COVID-19 positive cases – all from on campus testing and all were students. The seven-day percent positive rate for students has grown to 2.7 percent while the seven-day average of all positive cases has grown to 44.3 cases per day. In total, according to UW’s Smart Restart Dashboard, there are now 3,697 students who have tested positive and 231 employees for a total of 3,928 cumulative cases for UW students and staff.
