Contemporary African music artist Dobet Gnahoré will perform in Memorial Union’s Shannon Hall on Friday, March 12, 7:30 p.m. as part of the Wisconsin Union Theater (WUT) season.
Gnahoré is a vocalist, dancer, songwriter and percussionist from Côte d’Ivoire. Her latest album, “ZouZou,” produced by Momo Wang, also known as Dr. Wang, is a tribute to children in Africa and a message of hope for the future, according to a press release from the Wisconsin Union Theater, who has served as a center for cultural activity in the heart of the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus for more than 80 years.
Gnahoré began training in music, dance and theater at a young age. She then moved to France in 1999, where she expanded her music career. Her music blends traditional African rhythms with modern techniques. She often sings in multiple languages, such as Bété, Lingala, Malinké and French.
In 2010, Gnahoré won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the song “Pearls,” a collaboration with India.Arie, making her one of the first Ivorian artists to receive this award.
Patrons can purchase tickets for this event and other WUT-hosted performances online, in person at the Memorial Union Box Office or by phone at (608) 265-2787.
This performance will be presented by WUT and the Wisconsin Union Directorate Performing Arts Committee.
