Sable Flames, the organization for Madison’s Black firefighters, will host a fundraising event Sunday from 11 am until 2 pm at Bowl-a-Vard Lanes on Madison’s east side. Funds raised will go toward the Jones-Robinson Scholarship Fund, which last year awarded three scholarships of $1,500 each. Funds will also go toward the new Richard Garner Memorial Scholarship fund, established in honor of the Madison firefighter who died in the line of duty earlier this year, which will assist fire and EMS students specifically.

Sable Flames Chairman Douglas Johnson said the goal for Sunday is to raise $1,500 toward those scholarship funds, and sponsorships and preregistrations have the group well on its way.

For $60, a family or group can reserve a lane and bowl as much as they’d like. The $60 includes shoes. In addition, there will be a raffle, a firetruck for kids to explore, and Tales with Big T will be on hand with dogs for kids to pet and books to read.

This is the first “Bowlieve in Education” event, but Johnson said he hopes it will become the first annual. It joins the benefit dance Sable Flames holds every February as another source of funds for their scholarships.

In addition to funding scholarships, Sable Flames are available to participate in community events and service projects.

“If people need volunteers, we are more than willing to help them come out and do anything we can for people in the community,” Johnson said.

The event was originally scheduled for Schwoegler Park Towne Lanes on the west side, but flood damage there forced a change in venue.
