Over this past weekend, “Hidden Figures” brought its box office total to $119.4 million, surpassing La La Land ($118.3 million) as this year’s highest grossing Best Picture nominee.

Based on a true story, “Hidden Figures” is centered on three black women who provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions. Hidden Figures stars Taraji P. Henderson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe.

The news of the film’s success has been a huge step forward for diversity in film. Oscar nominations overall have become much more diverse after last year’s #OscarsSoWhite row. Seven of 20 actors nominated for an Academy Award are not white, compared to previous years which had no representation. This year, the nominations also include six African-American-themed films and at least 10 black actors and filmmakers.
