If Ho-Chunk Nation Supreme Court Justice Tricia Zunker overwhelmingly defeated Lawrence Dale to earn the Democratic nomination to replace Republican Sean Duffy and represent northern Wisconsin in the United States Congress.
Zunker, who is also president of the Wausau School Board, won with 88 percent of the vote and will face Republican Tom Tiffany in the special general election on May 12.
If elected, Zunker would be the first Native American to represent Wisconsin in Congress.
Zunker was the driving force behind a Wisconsin Association of School Boards resolution to condemn the practice of using Native American mascots in high school sports. She also pushed to have the City of Wausau and Marathon County recognize Indigenous People’s Day in October.
