House Democrats formally introduced a single article of impeachment against President Trump on Monday, charging him with “incitement of insurrection” for his role in last week’s violent riots at the US Capitol.
“He threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch of government,’ the document reads. “He therefore betrayed his trust as President, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.”
“Donald John Trump, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law.”
Republicans on Monday blocked a separate move to formally call on Vice President Mike Pence to strip Trump of power under the 25th Amendment.
