In the biggest single-day jump yet, increased testing found 344 new cases of novel coronavirus infection in Wisconsin — 150 of them in Brown County — to bring the statewide total to 5,436.

The increase is driven at least in part by an increase in testing; more than 3,400 tests were processed in the last 24 hours. The percentage of people newly tested who were found to be positive was just under nine percent, slightly lower than yesterday.

Five additional deaths bring the total fatalities in Wisconsin to 262.

Of the new cases, almost half — 164 — are Latino people. That means 21 percent of all those infected with coronavirus are Latino; Latino people make up just seven percent of the state’s population.

Hospitalizations also went up slightly; 361 people are currently hospitalized with COVID19, up from 349 on Thursday. Forty percent of those, or 143 people, are in intensive care. Three hundred eight, about 85 percent, require mechanical ventilation.
