Former San Antonio Mayor and US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro has announced that he will announce his plans for the 2020 presidential race on Saturday, January 12. He is widely expected to run.
He also announced Wednesday that he has formed an exploratory committee, the first step in formally beginning a campaign for the presidency.
Castro, 44, was mayor of his native San Antonio from 2010 until June 2014, when President Barack Obama appointed him Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He was the youngest member of Obama’s cabinet.
If he does indeed run, he would join what’s expected to be a crowded field of Democrats, which already includes Senator Elizabeth Warren, Representative John Delaney and West Virginia State Senator Richard Ojeda. Former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders and Senator Kamala Harris are also potential candidates.
