As of 1:30 am Wednesday, with nearly 100 percent of votes counted, Democrat Josh Kaul leads incumbent Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel by about 21,000 votes.

That margin is less than one percent of the 2.6 million votes cast, meaning Schimel could request a recount.

Schimel led by as many as 10,000 votes with more than 2.4 million votes counted until media outlets began reporting around midnight that the City of Milwaukee still had nearly 50,000 early vote ballots yet to report. Those broke heavily for Kaul, putting him over the top.

Kaul, who has spent much of his career as a federal prosecutor, is the son of the late Peg Lautenschlager, who served as attorney general from 2003-2007.
