Milwaukee school teacher Lakeisha Myers, who ran a campaign focused on education, defeated State Rep. Fred Kessler in yesterday’s Democratic primary. With no Republican or independent in the race, Myers will take the seat Kessler has held since 2004.

Kessler, 78, was first elected to the seat in 1960, but left the Assembly to serve as a judge in the 1970s and 80s.

According to her biography on her campaign website, Myers served as a legislative aide to State Senator Lena Taylor after graduating from Alcorn State University in 2006 and later worked as a clerk and legislative aide in the United States House of Representatives. She currently serves MPS as a school support coach at one of the district’s alternative education center.
