Carola Gaines (red hat) celebrates her YWCA Women of Distinction Award with her Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters at a previous YWCA Women of Distinction Awards ceremony.

Do you know a woman who is outstanding in her field and is making a difference in people’s lives? The YWCA Madison is looking for nominees for their annual Women of Distinction Awards who are supportive of the YWCA’s work to close the leadership gap and support equity for all. The deadline to submit a nomination is approaching fast – this Friday, Jan. 26, 4 p.m.

Women of Distinction Leadership Award recipients will be selected by that committee of community leaders and YWCA board members who meet to consider nominations and then make the final selections. Awardees and their nominators were notified of selection in early March.

The Women of Distinction event began in 1974, when Louise Marston Conklin, a longtime editor of the Wisconsin State Journal, retired and decided to turn her retirement celebration into a benefit for the YWCA, on whose board she then served. Since that time, they have recognized more than 200 Women of Distinction. In addition to recognizing outstanding women leaders, the event also raises money to support YWCA programming throughout the year through corporate sponsorship and event ticket sales.

YWCA Madison advances race and gender equity to create a more inclusive community and helps people improve their financial situations through job training and transportation. They also support people in housing and shelter. Past Women of Distinction winners have demonstrated community service, professional achievement, integrity, leadership and dedication to the lives of others and to the quality of life for all and have stood as a reflection of the YWCA’s historic mission and values.
