Make Music Madison, the annual one-day, free city-wide event where Madisonians come together with neighbors and friends and share the love of music, will be returning on June 21, the first day of summer.

Make Music Madison is part of the global Make Music Day movement, which sees over 1,000 cities worldwide unite with music every June 21st.

This tradition started in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, in which musicians of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels get together to make, perform, teach and learn music. The daylong, musical free-for-all celebrates music in all its forms, encouraging people to band together and play in free public concerts.

Make Music Day was established in Madison in 2013 by a passionate group of residents, along with the invaluable backing of the City of Madison and the Madison Arts Commission, who continue to provide vital support for Make Music Madison. Twenty-three cities across Wisconsin will participate in Make Music Day on June 21.

Last year, Madison had the highest level of participation in North America with 196 venues, 621 concerts, and well over 1,500 musicians, according to a press release from the City of Madison.
