Marcus Robert Johnson, a former Golden Gloves boxer and East Side bartender, launched his campaign for Madison mayor Tuesday.
Johnson, a boxing trainer who represented Wisconsin in a Golden Gloves of America tournament, has also worked at the Harmony Bar on Atwood Ave., a popular establishment on Madison’s East Side.
“I will show the value of everyday ordinary people. We are the owners and shareholders of this city,” Johnson said in a social media post. “There’s nothing stopping a majority of citizens from changing their lives for the better. We will restore the integrity we lost over the last seven years…”
Current reporting lists Johnson among the candidates challenging incumbent Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway in the 2027 mayoral race, along with former Dane County Board Supervisor April Kigeya, One City Schools founder and CEO Kaleem Caire, who officially launched earlier this week, former Alders Syed Abbas and Brian Benford, Monkey Bar Gym founder Jonny Hinds and food service director Larry Williams.
The Madison City Clerk currently lists Johnson and the other candidates among those who have filed campaign paperwork.
The primary election is Feb. 16, 2027. The general election is April 6, 2027.
