MMSD announces school closure on May 1

School will be cancelled for all students on Friday, May 1, Madison Metropolitan School District announced today.

The announcement came after Madison Teachers Inc. (MTI) partners shared that they received 70 percent of staff signatures supporting participation in “A Day without Immigrants” as part of the May Day Strong national day of action.

“We know shifts to the school schedule can be impactful and appreciate the patience of our communities,” said Edell Fiedler, Senior Executive Director of Communications. “We look forward to welcoming students back to the classroom on Monday, May 4.”

MMSD stated that “we may experience low staff turnout and believe this will directly affect the safety of our community due to insufficient supervision and educational support for our students.”

There will be no after-school care on May 1. However, all other activities, including events and athletics, will continue as scheduled.
