Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR), in close collaboration with the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Athletic Department, is wrapping up a remarkable inaugural High School Girls Flag Football League season with a final championship tournament taking place on Sunday, June 28, 3-6 p.m. at La Follette High School.

“This is an incredible opportunity for girls to experience a new sport,” said Mary Roth, MSCR executive director, in a statement. “The support from the Green Bay Packers has been instrumental in turning this vision into reality. We are in a pilot year and the enthusiasm, learning and foundation we are building right now is unmatched.”

Adam Smith, a physical education teacher at Toki Middle School, had the idea to create a girls’ football league and reached out to the MMSD Athletic Department, which suggested working with MSCR. Smith successfully secured a significant grant from the Green Bay Packers and USA Football to help fund the league’s launch. With girls’ flag football rapidly growing nationwide and gaining momentum toward official sanctioning by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA), this league positions Madison athletes at the forefront of the movement.

All four MSCR Afterschool High School sites have teams participating along with Verona High School. The league has about 75 girls on teams in the league and will compete for the final championship.
