Amariah Kimbrew

The teenager shot at gas station on Madison’s east side last week has died, Dane County officials said.

Madison police were called to the Kwik Trip at 4402 East Buckeye Road just off Stoughton Road at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday for a report of someone being shot. Once there, officers found 15-year-old Amariah C. Kimbrew, of Cottage Grove, with a serious gunshot wound. She was later taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Kimbrew died Friday at a hospital of firearm-related trauma, according to a release from the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Madison police spokesman Officer David Dexheimer said the department’s initial investigation is leading them to believe the shooting was not intentional, but the investigation is still ongoing.

“It is with great sadness that we recognize the tragic passing of [Amariah]. We understand the public interest in this case,” Dexheimer said Friday in a statement. “This remains an open investigation and we will provide updates as they are available.”

Kimbrew was a sophomore at Monona Grove High School, according to an email sent to parents Monday by the Monona Grove School District.

“It is with great sadness that we share with you that Amariah Kimbrew, a Monona Grove sophomore, was involved in an incident last week that has claimed her life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Amariah’s family during this time of loss and grief,” the email said.

Officials said counseling support will be available over the course of the week.
