The Green Bay Packers will begin the 2026 season with a running back committee after star running back Josh Jacobs was placed on the NFL’s Commissioner’s Exempt List.
Jacobs’ availability for the season is in question following an alleged domestic violence incident in May. Prosecutors allege that Jacobs slammed a woman to the ground in a garage as she attempted to leave.
Prosecutors have reduced the charges against Jacobs, which originally included a felony strangulation charge.
Brown County prosecutors charged Jacobs with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property stemming from a May 23 incident.
According to a criminal complaint, police responded to Jacobs’ home after his girlfriend went through his phone and apparently discovered he was speaking to other women. “A physical struggle ensued”, according to the complaint, eventually culminating in Jacobs allegedly slamming her down in the garage.
Jacobs is expected to be in court on Nov. 17.
Jacobs is banned from practicing or attending games while on the exempt list.
In the meantime, the Packers acquired former Steelers running back Kaleb Johnson, who is the presumptive starter until Jacobs’ return. Second-year back Marshawn Lloyd has also been impressive during the preseason.
The Packers open the season on Sept.13 at Minnesota.
