The Madison Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB) will co-host a community forum Thursday, Sept. 17, 5-8:30 p.m., focused on police accountability, public safety and systemic reform following the Madison Police Department’s killing of Corey Ruiz.
The forum will take place at the Goodman Community Center’s Brassworks Building, 214 Waubesa St. The event will be facilitated by dr. ananda mirilli and is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged but not required.
The forum is intended to allow community members to exchange information, raise concerns and discuss potential responses to issues surrounding policing and public safety.
“I am part of a group of community members planning a community forum focused on accountability, advocacy, public safety, community support, and coalition-building in response to critical community concerns and recent events,” said Devon Snyder, chair of community engagement for the PCOB, in a press release.
Topics will include the Ruiz killing and its aftermath, independent investigative processes and legal protections, police policy reforms, the state of Madison’s independent police oversight, housing and homelessness, civilian crisis response, racial disparities and policy, and a call to action, according to a news release.
Panelists will include Aeiramique Glass, Madison’s independent police monitor; members of the PCOB; Common Council Vice President Carmella Glenn; Alder Davy Mayer; Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores, a key witness and former PCOB chair; and Chip Cruz, a representative of the Williamson Marquette Business Alliance.
The forum is being co-hosted by the PCOB, Community Response Team, Freedom, Inc. and the Social Justice Center.
