Arts + Literature Laboratory (ALL) will present PUSH/PULL, a two-artist exhibition by Madison painters Austin Moule and Andres Torres, on view from July 22 through August 6. Moule and Torres engage in an exploration of materiality and meaning through the vehicle of abstract painting. Moule’s work reflects a casual attitude toward the traditions of painting with keen interest in process and the interaction of disparate media. Similarly, Torres is involved in an investigation of materiality but on a smaller, more intimate scale. His minimal paintings quietly assert themselves as aesthetic objects as well as subjects for contemplation. Though abundant with difference, the artists share a common interest in unorthodox paint application, composition, and color, and the communicative potential of painting. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 22, 7-9 p.m.
Arts + Literature Laboratory (ALL) is a nonprofit community art space for visual, literary and performing artists to share their work and create new connections. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Austin Moule was born in Charleston, South Carolina. At the age of four, his family moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida so his father could work at a near by Naval Base. Moue’s initial interest in art was instigated by his involvement with surfing and skateboarding and the visual culture that surrounds it. Moule received his BFA with a concentration in Printmaking at the University of North Florida. Currently, Moule is pursuing his MFA at the University of Wisconsin with a concentration in painting. Recent work has employed abstract figuration in the creation of fictional landscapes that are, at once, playful and optimistic, while simultaneously shallow and impartial. The work suggests and individual struggling to locate both, place, and themselves within it.
Andres Torres earned his BFA from the University of South Dakota and is currently pursuing his MFA at UW Madison. This body of work revolves around raw canvas and the various effects it has on different media.
In addition to the opening reception on Friday, July 22, 7-9pm, the gallery will abe open for summer hours Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11am-3pm; Thursdays 11am-7pm; and by appointment.
