The city of Milwaukee wants to offer Bucks guard Sterling Brown $400,000 to settle his lawsuit filed against the city and members of the police department for using excessive force against him in a Walgreen’s parking lot last year, according to a letter from the Milwaukee City Attorney.
The incident happened in the early morning of Jan. 26, 2018, when officers were doing a business check at a Walgreens at 26th Street and West National Avenue in Milwaukee and spotted Brown’s car parked across two handicapped spots. Eight officers were soon standing around Brown when one asks him to take his hands out of his pockets. An officer would soon yell: “Taser! Taser! Taser!” and Brown was hit and taken down.
Brown was taken to jail but wasn’t charged. Three officers were disciplined. Their suspensions ranged from 2 to 15 days.
The lawsuit by Brown alleges the Milwaukee Police Department’s arrest of him was unlawful and racially motivated excessive force.
The settlement now heads to the Milwaukee Common Council’s Judiciary and Legislation Committee which meets next on June 10th.
