Ritchie Torres becomes first gay Afro-Latino elected to Congress

Democratic New York City Councilman Ritchie Torres was declared the winner in the House race for New York’s 15th Congressional District on Tuesday night, making him the first gay Afro Latino person elected to Congress.

“Tonight, we made history. It is the honor of a lifetime to represent the essential borough, the Bronx,” Torres said in a Tweet.

Torres, a city councilman and the first openly gay elected official in the Bronx, easily defeated his opponent, Republican Patrick Delices.
