Day one of the TYBC All American Games gave us a look at some of the top young girls basketball players in Wisconsin, with many of the state’s best from the 2030 and 2031 classes competing before today’s championship games.
There was plenty of talent in the gym, but a few players separated themselves with their scoring, competitiveness, basketball IQ and versatility.
Here are seven players who caught my attention on day one.
Nevaeh Smith | 5’4” | PG/CG | 2030
It’s hard to start anywhere else. Smith poured in 32 points in her opening game while helping lead her team to a victory. She was aggressive offensively and showed she could carry a significant scoring load when her team needed it. Thirty two points against this level of competition will get your attention.
Alyse Winzer | 5’4” | PG | 2030
Winzer’s quickness immediately stood out, but what impressed me most was how she used it. She consistently got the ball where it needed to go and found teammates at the right time. There is a difference between playing fast and understanding how to play with pace. Winzer showed both.
Kylee Campbell | 6’2” | Post | 2032
Remember the name. Campbell is only in the 2031 class, but you wouldn’t have known it watching her compete against older players. At 6’2”, her presence inside was impressive, and then she stepped outside and knocked down a couple of three pointers. Height gets your attention. Height combined with developing perimeter skill makes you keep watching.
Peyton Luna | 5’7” | PG | 2030
Peyton always seems to be in control when the basketball is in her hands. She has a high basketball IQ, understands pace and rarely looks rushed. On day one, she showed that she belongs in the conversation with the top guards in Wisconsin’s 2030 class.
Cora LaChance | 5’9” | SG | 2030
There isn’t much hesitation in Cora’s offensive game. She is looking to attack and put pressure on the defense. That aggressiveness showed throughout day one as she provided consistent scoring and helped keep her team’s offense moving.
Stella Yarco | 5’10” | SG/CG | 2030
Stella plays fast and with intensity. Her competitive nature is one of the first things you notice when she steps on the floor. She brought energy on day one and did a good job making her presence felt on both ends of the court.
Laila Rose | 5’11” | Wing/SF | 2030
Versatility was the word that came to mind watching Rose. Defensively, she showed the ability to match up with players in the post and then switch out onto guards. Offensively, she scored at two levels, knocking down the three and attacking the rim. At 5’11”, that ability to impact the game in different ways stood out.
