“Sustainability Summit” for youth at Henry Vilas Zoo set for May 28

Henry Vilas Zoo will host an interactive event aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices, in partnership with the Dane County Youth Governance Program (YGP) and the Dane County Department of Waste & Renewables. The event, called Sustainability Safari, will take place Wednesday, May 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event will feature youth-led stations throughout the zoo, offering hands-on activities focused on food waste reduction, composting, recycling, and other conservation-related topics. Organizers say the goal is to inspire community members—especially young people—to adopt environmentally friendly habits.

“It’s inspiring to see the next generation leading the way on sustainability,” Dane County Executive Melissa Agard said in a statement. “Through events like Sustainability Safari, our young leaders are not only learning but teaching others how we can all take simple steps to protect our planet.”

Sustainability Safari is free and open to the public, with a particular focus on youth interested in environmental issues and leadership.

The Youth Governance Program provides Dane County students with opportunities to participate in local government decision-making, build leadership skills, and engage with community issues.

In a statement, YGP member Sam Olson emphasized the significance of youth leadership in shaping environmental action. “What makes this event unique is that it is organized by youth, for youth,” Olson said. “We chose to raise awareness about sustainable practices because they are essential to preserving our ecosystems and supporting healthy communities.”

Olson added that the program has helped participants gain experience in leadership, collaboration, and advocacy, and hopes the event will “encourage youth to adopt and continue sustainable practices in their everyday lives.”
