The grand opening of the Madison Public Market today, after some 20 years of planning, will be postponed due to the death of Corey Durell Ruiz on Williamson Street on Wednesday and its impact on the greater Madison community.
“Yesterday, our community experienced a tragic loss with the death of Corey Durell
Ruiz. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and to
everyone impacted by this tragedy,” the Madison Public Market said in a statement. “Today was intended to mark the Grand Opening of the Madison Public Market—a
milestone more than 20 years in the making and a celebration of the entrepreneurs,
artists, community members, partners, and supporters who have worked together to
bring this vision to life. After thoughtful conversations with our merchants, it became clear that now is not the right time for a public celebration. In solidarity with our community, Madison Public Market merchants collectively made the decision to remain closed through this weekend.”
The Madison Public Market plans to bring together “an incredible collection of local entrepreneurs, makers, chefs, artists, and small businesses under one roof,” according to the market’s website, and will feature produce from Wisconsin farms, culturally diverse prepared food, locally made food products and handcrafted arts/crafts.
The Madison Public Market is regularly closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and is expected to reopen on Wednesday, July 29.
