Carvd N Stone is currently taking applications for its annual Travel Writing Scholarship.
Carvd N Stone, a Milwaukee based world-wide news outlet and marketing agency centered on BIPOC communities and positivity, has opened applications for the Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship. The scholarship, in its third year, comes from Steve Hintz, the son of former Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Loren Martin Hintz, in honor of his father to give young writers a chance to advance their careers.
The scholarship encourages writers to experience travel, an important component in the life of Carvd N Stone’s founder Nyesha Stone, and to round out the costs of being a writer.
Hintz was famously known for his photographs of unique people and moments around the world. He was an author and writer at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel along with being chair of the Freelance Council of the Society of American Travel Writers and President of the Society of American Travel Writers from 2001-2002.
“I love traveling and he [Hintz] loved traveling and I just really want our youth in Milwaukee, our inner-city youth, to have more experiences traveling and to be able to have the opportunity to talk about it,” Stone said.
Applicants will have to write an 800-word essay, be 17 – 29 years old and be a Milwaukee resident for a chance at a $1,000 scholarship. This year’s theme will ask applicants “What lessons have you learned while traveling that you’ve implemented in your everyday life and why?”
The essay is a chance to tell a story about the applicant’s travel and write a compelling narrative of how it affected them. Applicants are expected to have already traveled. Locations do not have to be far, generally somewhere the applicant hasn’t been before like a park an hour or two away, Stone said.
“I want people to have fun with this,” Stone said. “What I’m looking for is for someone to tell me a story. I want to feel like I know you after I’m done reading this.”
The application for the Travel Writing Scholarship is open until May 17 at noon. Applications can be submitted on Carvd N Stone’s website.
