The Trump administration told migrant shelters this week to begin cutting services for unaccompanied migrant children staying at federal shelters across the country — things like legal aid, English classes and recreational activity like soccer — that are not directly related to children’s safety.

The White House had decided to stop providing “English classes, recreational programs, and legal aid for unaccompanied minors staying in federal migrant shelters nationwide, saying the immigration influx at the southern border has created critical budget pressures,” according to the Washington Post.

Under current U.S. law, migrant children who illegally cross into the U.S. must be sent to a government shelter, where they stay until they can be united with relatives or other sponsors while awaiting immigration court hearings.
