Madison College has named Julia McKnight as the recipient of the 2026 Kou Her Memorial Scholarship, an award that recognizes adult learners of Asian descent who exemplify perseverance, determination, and a commitment to transforming their lives through education.

The Kou Her Memorial Scholarship supports students who have completed their GED or HSED through Madison College School of Academic Advancement and are continuing their education in a degree program.

“Good things happen when you refuse to give up,” McKnight said in a press release. “Earning a degree will create greater opportunities and security for my family. I want to show my loved ones that hard work and education can open doors regardless of age or past obstacles.”

Kou Her was a Madison College high school completion instructor who dedicated many years to supporting students. As an immigrant himself, he understood the experiences and challenges many Madison College students faced and was deeply committed to their success.

The $1,000 scholarship honors Her’s legacy by continuing his commitment to helping students overcome obstacles and achieve their educational goals.

Having recently earned her GED/HSED, McKnight will pursue a nursing degree at Madison College, a field that allows her to make a meaningful difference in others’ lives.

“Becoming a nurse will allow me to give back by providing quality healthcare, supporting patients and families during difficult times, and promoting health and wellness,” McKnight said. “Through my education, I hope to contribute to a healthier and stronger community while encouraging others to believe in the power of education and lifelong learning.”
