Progressive activists Yogesh Chawla and Pam Porter have advanced to the April 3 election to replace retiring County Board Supervisor John Hendrick representing District Six, on Madison’s east side, on the Dane County Board of Supervisors.

Porter carried 40.7 percent of the vote to Chawla’s 37.4 percent. Heather Driscoll received 12.4 percent and Britt Cudaback 9.4 percent.

Chawla is seeking to be the first Indian American elected to the County Board and join Shelia Stubbs, Jamie Kuhn and Patrick Miles as the only people of color on the 37-member Board.

“Our district needs a true progressive with a deep connection to the community,” Chawla said. “I’m ready to get to work reducing racial disparities in our criminal justice system … and representing all the voices in our community.”

In the only other contested County Board primary, Kelly Danner earned a surprising 39 percent of the vote in District 11, rendering longtime incumbent Al Matano vulnerable in the general election. Matano got 48.4 percent of the primary vote.
