The Senate voted today to confirm retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson as the next secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

The vote was 58-41, coming down largely along party lines.

Carson ran against President Donald Trump during last year’s Republican presidential primary, before dropping out and endorsing Trump. Carson is a Washington outsider with no prior government experience and a staunchly conservative view of public assistance. He has indicated that he will embark on a “listening tour” to learn from career HUD employees and public servants across the country.
