Dick Gregory

Comedian, author, and civil rights activist Dick Gregory, who broke down barriers in the 1960s and became one of the first African-Americans to perform at white clubs, died Saturday at a Washington, D.C. hospital surrounded by family members. He was 84.

The civil rights activist was known for his ‘no holds barred’ approach to enlightening audiences around the world on race relations, religion and health. Gregory recently rescheduled an event in Atlanta because he was hospitalized.

“It is with enormous sadness that the Gregory family confirms that their father, comedic legend and civil rights activist Mr. Dick Gregory departed this earth tonight in Washington, DC,” Christian Gregory, the comedian’s son said in a statement posted to Instagram on Saturday.

“The family appreciates the outpouring of support and love and respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time. More details will be released over the next few days.”
