First lady Michelle Obama will award the Madison Public Library and nine other institutions an award next week in Washington D.C. for their service to the community.
The library will accept the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service at an event next Wednesday at the White House.
Joining the library director at the White House will be Rob Franklin. Franklin will talk about how the library Artist in Residence helped him learn about how to create music videos at the library.
After Franklin received his instruction, he volunteered to provide media instruction to local students and expand outreach to at-risk youth.
“One kid opened up more to me in two weeks than to the teacher who’d done therapy sessions with him over the course of a year,” said Franklin. “Being able to bring joy and self-expression to kids who’ve lived tough lives is bigger than any record I could ever sell.”
The Madison Library will be joined by other prestigious institutions from across the country at the event, including libraries from New York, Connecticut, North Carolina and Arkansas.
