Jael Currie garnered 60 percent of the vote to defeat Matt Tramel and become the next Madison Common Council representative for District 16 on the city’s East Side.
Currie, the housing director for YWCA of Madison, will replace outgoing alder Michael Tierney.
“This has truly been a humbling and momentous experience as both a born and bred Madisonian and first time candidate,” Currie said in a statement Tuesday night. “Thank you to the residents of District 16 for affording me the opportunity to serve as your Council representative. I commit to being an authentic, solution focused, and accountable leader as your next Alder and look forward to connecting, engaging, and growing with, and alongside you.”
She tallied 1,600 votes to Tramel’s 1,074.
