Huma Ahsan, a Fitchburg immigration attorney and founder and principal of Madison Immigration Law, will take on incumbent Ben Jones in the April election for Dane County Circuit judge, after the two emerged as the winners in a three-way primary Tuesday.
Jones tallied 52.8 percent of the vote to Ahsan’s 35.2 percent. Nathan Wagner came in third with 11.9 percent of the vote.
“I am deeply grateful to the voters of Dane County for the strong support demonstrated tonight in the primary election for Circuit Court, Branch 1. Your confidence in my experience, integrity, and commitment to fair and impartial justice is incredibly motivating,” Jones said in a statement. “Throughout this campaign, we’ve focused on what matters most: ensuring that every person who enters our courtrooms is treated with dignity, that the rule of law is upheld without bias or favor, and that our justice system remains independent and accessible to all. I’m honored that so many voters responded to that message.”
Ahsan said that this campaign has never been about “titles, appointments or endorsements.”
“It’s about justice and standing up when our foundational rights are treated as negotiable. Our campaign consists of a small, but mighty, group of volunteers on a shoestring budget, and still our message resonated with Dane County voters,” said Ahsan in a statement. “Our courts tell the story of us as a people; who we are and what we believe,” she added. “Who sits in this position of power will determine if all people of Dane County are seen and heard in our court system.”
The general election is April 7.
