City of Madison Civil Rights Director Norman Davis and four members of the department staff took a knee for a photo posted to the department’s Facebook page Wednesday evening in response to Police Chief Mike Koval’s announcement in a blog post that he was cancelling his NFL subscription over continuing national anthem protests.

“We just wanted to share our support for those who chose to silently protest or peacefully protest,” Davis told Madison365 Thursday. “It’s common knowledge the civil rights work in this country really has a foundation of peaceful protest so we just wanted to share our support and encourage a climate for respecting those who choose to do that.”

Joining Davis in the photo are Equal Opportunities Division Investigator Charlyn Cruz-Nuñez, Affirmative Action Compliance Officer Kate McCarthy, Disability Rights and Services Coordinator Jason Glozier and Affirmative Action Division Manager Felicia Jones.

The photo was posted with no accompanying statement other than a link to a Channel3000.com story about Koval’s blog post.

“Chief Koval and I have a very professional relationship,” Davis said. “I respect the fact that all of us can have our opinion but I wanted to at least share my encouragement for others to consider having a climate for respecting peaceful protest.”
