COVID testing is down sharply; Wisconsin’s numbers still high, but falling

The state of Wisconsin is processing far fewer tests for novel coronavirus than it did at the peak in mid-November — barely over half the number on a daily basis — which is likely responsible for a sharp decline in the number of new cases confirmed each day.

From December 5-12, the state processed an average of 10,536 tests per day, a 44 percent drop since the daily testing rate peaked at 18,857 on November 18.

On Sunday, the state reported 2,757 new cases on 12,175 tests — a daily percentage of 22.6 percent positive, the lowest rate in more than two weeks.

The seven-day positive rate for all people tested fell from 28.0 to 27.8, and the positive rate for all tests fell from 11.3 to 10.9. The number of active cases continued its steady decline and is now just over 45,000 — about 10.5 percent of the 436,773 total cases the state has confirmed to date.

The state of Wisconsin reported 15 COVID deaths on Saturday, bringing the state’s total death toll to 4,056. An additional 75 people have tested positive for COVID but died of other causes. The seven-day daily death average fell from 48.43 to 48.14.

The seven-day average of new cases per day increased slightly to 3,740.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID19 ticked back up after a few weeks of steady declines. Currently, 1,425 people are hospitalized due to COVID19, 41 more than yesterday but 77 fewer than a week ago. The number of people in intensive care fell by four to 318. The patient population of the alternate care facility in Milwaukee fell from eight to seven.
