Dane County reports 270 new cases as active cases grow slightly

After two days of reporting no new data due to technical issue in receiving data from the state, Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported 270 new cases Sunday, increasing the county’s cumulative total of 33,399. Recovered cases grew to 31,248, however, active cases grew slightly to 1,960 or 5.9 percent of all cases. Yesterday, active cases were at 1,843 or 5.6 percent of all cases.

Hospitalizations in Dane County continued to grow slightly this morning from yesterday, according to today’s update, with 116 people from both in and out of Dane County hospitalized. Public Health of Madison and Dane County also reported 34 of the 116 people in the hospital are in the ICU.

For Dane County residents, the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has been grown from 1002 to 1008. Of the six new people from Dane County ever hospitalized, a child under 10, a person in their 40s and one person from the following age groups were hospitalized: 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.

The number of hospitalizations for residents in the county continues to impact adults 60 and older the most for the past few weeks; however the increases are steadily declining. Madison365 has graphed that growth from information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data. As of this morning, those numbers reflect that the number of hospitalized cases in adults in their 90s have increased by 11.6 percent since December 20. Those in their 20s grew by 10.1 percent while children under 10 have grown by 7.7 percent. Hospitalizations overall for Dane County residents have grown 6.8 percent since December 20.

Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color with those who are American Indian/Alaskan in our community growing by 14.3 percent since December 20. The percentage of hospitalizations for people who are Black in our community have grown 6.1 percent as those who are Hispanic/Latinx grew by 6.4 percent in hospitalizations and those who are Asian have grown by 2.7 percent during this time frame.

Of the new 270 cases reported today, 18 were attributed to January 2 while 117 were added to January 1. There were 130 new cases added to December 31, increasing that day’s total to 305. The seven-day average as of January 2 is at 152.7 while the 14-day average is now at 137.1 new cases per day.

The percentage of positive for January 2 is at 2.7 while January 1 now at 7.4. The new percentage of positive for December31 is 6.3 while the December 30 has remained at 5.1. The seven-day percentage of positive as of January 2 is at 5.6 while the 14 day average is now at 4.7. Madison365 expects these numbers to adjust as Public Health of Madison and Dane County continue to receive updated results throughout the week.

Though age groups between 0 – 79 grew by double digits today, adults in their 30s grew the most with 53 new cases or 19.6 percent of all new cases reported, and adults in their 20s grew by 50 new cases. Those in their 40s grew by 44 cases, those aged 10-19 grew by 29, adults in their 50s by 27 and adults in their 60s by 24 new cases. Children under 10 grew by 18 new cases while adults in their 70s grew by 16. In single digit increases, adults in their 90s grew by six and adults in their 80s grew by three.

When looking at our communities of color, Black people and those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx grew by 26 new cases or 9.6 percent of all new cases respectively. There were also 15 new cases reported for Asian people in our community and those who are American Indian/Alaskan grew by one.

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, infection in those in their 90s grew by 8.7 percent as children under 10 have grown by 7.1 percent. Adults in their 70s grew by 7.8 percent and adults in their 60s have grown by 7.5 percent since December 20. Overall, cases have grown by 6 percent since December 20.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, those who are Asian have grown by 8.2 percent since December 20 while those who are American Indian/Alaskan have grown by 6.8 percent. Black people gave grown by 5.6 percent during this same time period while Hispanic/Latinx people have grown by 5.2 percent.

UW has not had an update since December 30. Based on their current data, there are 4,828 total positive cases for UW students, and 545 positive cases for UW employees for a total of 5,342 total cases from UW since tracking began for campus. The most recent updated 7 day average of cases is now at 6.0 for both students and staff in on and off campus testing as of December 29. The 7 day average for the percentage of positives for students is at 0.8 percent for students and 1.1 percent for employees from on campus testing as of December 29.
