Dane County reports eight deaths, 176 new cases

Public Health of Madison and Dane County reported eight new COVID19 deaths this morning, increasing the total number of deaths from COVId-19 in Dane County to 190. Of the eight new deaths, four were in their 70s, two in their 80s, one in their 60s and one person in their 90s. Five of the deaths were women and one person who passed was Asian, according to the update.

Deaths in Dane County have increased by 16.6 percent since December 22. Most of those who have died — almost 87 percent — are 70 year of age or older.

Public Health of Madison and Dane County also reported 176 new positive cases from COVID-19 Tuesday morning, increasing the county’s cumulative total to 33,780. Recovered cases in Dane County grew to 31,519, however, active cases also grew slightly for a third day to 2,079, or 6.15 percent of all cases. Yesterday, active cases were at 2,032 or 6.05 percent of all cases.

Hospitalizations in Dane County continued to grow this morning from yesterday, according to today’s update, with 122 people from both in and out of Dane County hospitalized. Public Health of Madison and Dane County also reported 38 of the 119 people in the hospital are in the ICU.

For Dane County residents, the number of people ever hospitalized for COVID-19 has been grown from 1,010 to 1,027 with one person in their 90s removed from the data. Of the 17 new people form Dane County hospitalized, five are in their 40s, four in their 70s, three in their 80s, three in their 20s, two in their 60s and one person in their 50s. There were also three Black people from Dane County hospitalized along with three people who were Asian and one person who identified as Hispanic/Latinx.

Hospitalizations for the past two weeks have seen a 7 percent increase since December 22 overall for Dane County residents. Though the highest increases have occurred mostly in those 60 and older, in the last couple of days, younger age groups have also seen higher rates. Madison365 has graphed the information gathered daily from PHMDC’s data. As of this morning, those numbers reflect that the number of hospitalized cases in adults in their 20s have grown 13.9 percent while those in their 40s have grown 10.9 percent since December 22. Children under 10 have grown by 7.7 percent during the same time frame while adults in their 70s have grown by 7 percent.

Hospitalizations also continue to significantly impact our communities of color with those who are American Indian/Alaskan in our community growing by 14.3 percent since December 22. The percentage of hospitalizations for people who are Black in our community have grown 8.1 percent as those who are Hispanic/Latinx grew by 8.6 percent in hospitalizations.

Of the new 176 cases reported today, 72 were attributed to January 4 while 55 were added to January 3 – increasing that day’s total to 156. The rest of the cases were added to dates late last week. The seven-day average of positive cases as of January 4 is at 169.6 while the 14-day average is now at 148.5 new cases per day.

The percentage of positive for January 4 is at 6.0 while January 3 now at 8.6. The new percentage of positive for January 2 is 8.6 while January 1 is at 8.0. The seven-day percentage of positive as of January 4 is at 6.7 while the 14 day average is now at 5.7. Madison365 expects these numbers to adjust as Public Health of Madison and Dane County continue to receive updated results throughout the week.

Age groups between 10 – 69 grew by double digits today with adults in their 20s grew by 44 new cases or 25 percent while adults in their 30s grew by 29 new cases, adults in their 40s grew by 27 new cases followed by those aged 10-19 adding 26 new cases. Adults in their 50s grew by 18 new cases, adults in their 60s by 11 new cases and children under 10 by 10. Adults in their 70s have grown by eight new cases while adults in their 80s grew by three.

When looking at our communities of color, those who identify as Hispanic/Latinx grew by 13 new cases or 7.4 percent of all new cases while Asian people in Dane County grew by 10 new cases and Black people grew by eight new cases or 6.8 percent. Those who are American Indian/Alaskans in our community added two additional cases.

Looking at growth over the past two weeks, infection in those under 10 grew by 8 percent along with adults in their 70s. Adults in their 50s grew by 7.9 percent while adults in their 60s grew by 7.8 percent and adult sin their 40s growing by 7.6 percent since December 22. Overall, cases have grown 6.4 percent since December 22.

In terms of case growth for the past two weeks for our communities of color, those who are Asian have grown by 9.1 percent since December 22 while those who are American Indian/Alaskan have grown by 6.7 percent. Black people gave grown by 5.8 percent during this same time period while Hispanic/Latinx people have grown by 5.5 percent.

As of January 3rd, UW has a total of 4,844 total positive cases for UW students, and 554 positive cases for UW employees for a total of 5,554 total cases from UW since tracking began for campus. The most recent updated 7 day average of cases is now at 6.4 for both students and staff in on and off campus testing as of January 1. The 7 day average for the percentage of positives for students is at 1.4 percent for students and 1.0 percent for employees from on campus testing as of December 29.
